About Club

Woodbridge Aquatic Club (WAC) is a competitive swimming organization dedicated to instilling upon its athletic membership life skills and habits that will continually contribute to their lifelong well-being and citizenship. WAC maintains the belief that a competitive swimming program emphasizing excellence in personal performance, in conjunction with the daily underlying preparations towards such excellence, is an invaluable experience towards the achievement of this end. WAC will make every effort to provide each athlete with the opportunity to achieve his or her personal bests in swimming and in citizenship.

We practice at Beecher Road Elementary School, located at 40 Beecher Road in Woodbridge, Connecticut. The pool is a 6 lane 25 yard meter where WAC practices using all lanes. State of the art digital pace clocks are used during practice. The pool is easily accessible to residents of Woodbridge, Bethany, Orange, New Haven, Derby, and other surrounding towns

Tryouts

Length of Tryout for Prospective New Members:

All tryouts, once assigned to a practice squad, are invited to participate with that squad for 2 weeks before having to decide if WAC Swimming is the right fit for them. After this two week trial period tryouts must declare their intention to join or not join the team.

Tryouts, 12 Years of Age and Younger, New to Year-Round Competitive Swimming:

All tryouts new to competitive swimming need to participate in an initial 5 – 10 minute skill assessment where they will be asked to show, at minimum, that they can swim the length of the pool, 25 yards, using Freestyle while displaying the ability to breathe to their side, without stopping the stroke to do so. They must also show they can swim the length of the pool backstroke. After this skill assessment, each tryout will be assigned to a practice squad to begin the 2 week tryout period.

Tryouts, Swimmers, Any Age, with Prior Year-Round Competitive Swimming Experience:

Tryouts having prior year round competitive swimming experience may not need a skill assessment. Contact Head Coach Dave Reilly regarding initial squad assignment.

Skill Assessment Dates:

While Woodbridge Aquatic Club accepts new members almost any time of the year, we encourage all tryouts interested in participating with WAC for the 2019-2020 Fall/Winter season (Short Course) to drop by for their skill assessment on one of the following dates:

Wednesday: September 11, 5:15
Thursday: September 12, 6:00
Friday: September 13, 5:15

Skill Assessment and Tryout Fees:

The assessment is free, the two-week tryout period is $45 (payable to WAC). Tryouts who then join the team will have that $45 applied to their assigned squad’s short course training fee.

Required Equipment for All Participating Tryouts:

Swim goggles for all, bathing caps for those having hair down to the shoulders or longer.

Parent’s Role During Skill Assessments:

A parent or a guardian must be present, on deck, during the skill assessment. You will be asked to fill out a “New Swimmer” form. A coach will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Parents’ Role During the Two Week Tryout Period:

Parents or guardians are encouraged to observe practices during the two-week tryout period. Our observation area is the windowed space above the pool.
